Finix lets approved U.S. merchants accept ACH Direct Debits from customer bank accounts. The payment may display SUCCEEDED before the buyer’s bank has finally accepted it, and Finix says complete confirmation can take 4 to 10 business days. This independent guide is not affiliated with or operated by Finix.
Treat an ACH payment differently from a card approval. Do not ship a high-risk order merely because the first Finix status changed from PENDING.
What is a Finix ACH payment?
An ACH Direct Debit pulls money from a buyer’s U.S. bank account through the Automated Clearing House network. Finix positions bank payments as an alternative to credit and debit cards, including for invoices, subscriptions and other account-to-account transactions.
Finix also supports Canadian EFT payments, but ACH Direct Debit refers to the U.S. bank-payment flow. Payment Links can be configured to accept bank accounts alongside cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The buyer-facing choice may simply say Bank Account on a Finix Payment Link. The merchant selects that option under Allowed Payment Methods when creating the link.
Bank payments can cost less than some card transactions, depending on the merchant agreement. They also introduce a longer failure window.
That tradeoff matters.
What do PENDING, SUCCEEDED and FAILED mean?
Finix documents three main ACH Direct Debit states.
| Finix status | Meaning |
|---|---|
PENDING | Finix is processing the ACH debit |
SUCCEEDED | Finix accepted and submitted the debit, but the buyer’s bank may not have confirmed it |
FAILED | Finix did not accept the ACH debit |
The surprising status is SUCCEEDED.
For a card payment, users often read “succeeded” as final approval. Finix specifically says an ACH transaction marked SUCCEEDED has been submitted to the ACH network, while the customer’s bank may still return it later. Full processing and confirmation can take between 4 and 10 business days.
A merchant should therefore separate two questions:
- Did Finix accept the payment request?
- Did the buyer’s bank ultimately honor the debit?
SUCCEEDED answers the first question sooner than it answers the second.
How long does Finix hold ACH payments?
Finix applies an ACH Settlement Delay before batching ACH Direct Debits into merchant settlements. Its default delay is five business days.
The delay exists because ACH returns may arrive after the transaction is submitted.
A shorter delay puts the ACH payment into the merchant’s settlement sooner, but it creates a greater chance that Finix has already paid the merchant before the bank returns the debit. A longer delay gives more time for returns to appear before merchant funding. Finix says merchants can discuss changing the delay with their Finix contact or support team.
Five business days does not mean five calendar days.
A transaction initiated before a weekend or bank holiday can remain outside the merchant payout longer than expected. The customer’s bank, Finix settlement configuration and later return activity also affect the practical timeline.
Finix’s broader marketing page says ACH payments commonly settle in one to three business days at the network level, while its merchant documentation applies a five-business-day default settlement delay for ACH Direct Debits. These statements describe different stages: network settlement and Finix’s risk-based merchant funding schedule.
Do not merge them into one promised deposit date.
Why can an ACH payment return later?
ACH is not a real-time guarantee that usable funds exist.
Finix warns that ACH returns can create losses and recommends accepting bank debits from buyers with whom the merchant has a known or established relationship. The documentation also suggests considering a hold before delivering goods or services.
A bank debit can be returned for reasons such as:
- Insufficient funds
- A closed account
- Incorrect account information
- A stopped payment
- An authorization dispute
- An account that cannot accept the debit
The specific reason is normally represented by an ACH return code. Nacha maintains the ACH Network rules and standardized return framework, while processors expose the relevant outcome through their own systems.
Finix says buyers may dispute an ACH Direct Debit for up to 60 days after the initial payment date. That window is much longer than the ordinary five-day settlement delay.
This creates residual risk even after a merchant has been funded.
A settlement deposit proves that Finix released money to the merchant. It does not make every later unauthorized-debit claim impossible.
How does Finix validate a bank account?
Finix validates a bank account before processing ACH payments, including the first time the account is used and after changes are made. Its bank_account_validation_check field can show NOT_ATTEMPTED, VALID, INVALID or INCONCLUSIVE.
| Validation result | Finix meaning |
NOT_ATTEMPTED | Validation has not run |
VALID | The account was located and confirmed to accept ACH debits |
INVALID | The account could not be validated; a transfer using it will fail |
INCONCLUSIVE | Validation did not reach a final result, but Finix may still allow a transfer |
An INVALID result deserves action before another payment attempt. Finix advises confirming the information with the account holder or requesting another payment method.
VALID is narrower than many users assume.
It indicates that the account was found and can receive ACH Direct Debits. It does not guarantee sufficient funds, continued account availability or the absence of a future authorization dispute.
Validation checks the account. It does not insure the transaction.
What does Plaid change?
Finix integrates with Plaid to connect and verify customer bank accounts. Plaid can verify account existence and ownership, then provide tokenized information that Finix uses to create a bank-account Payment Instrument.
Finix uses Plaid for several documented use cases:
- ACH Direct Debits from buyers
- Bank payouts to recipients
- Seller onboarding
- Recipient onboarding
Hosted Finix onboarding forms include Plaid Link by default, while sellers can also be allowed to enter bank information manually. For buyer payments, Finix’s JavaScript library can use Plaid automatically when creating a bank-account instrument.
The operational advantage is fewer manual-entry errors. Plaid can verify ownership immediately and reduces the need for the merchant or platform to handle raw bank details directly.
Plaid verification does not eliminate ACH returns.
A correctly identified account can still lack funds, be closed later or become subject to a disputed authorization. Use Plaid first for account accuracy; keep the normal ACH risk controls afterward.
Can a Payment Link accept ACH?
Yes. Finix Payment Links support U.S. ACH bank transfers, Canadian EFT, credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The merchant decides which methods appear by configuring Allowed Payment Methods when the link is created.
A buyer sees only the payment options enabled by the merchant and supported by the buyer’s device.
This explains a common mismatch: one Finix Payment Link may show Bank Account, while another link from the same business displays only card options. The payment method is configured per link rather than guaranteed across the whole account.
Check the link configuration first. Skip browser troubleshooting when ACH was never enabled on that payment request.
For high-value or fulfillment-sensitive sales, the merchant should also decide whether an ACH order remains pending internally until the return-risk period has passed.
Finix does not impose one fulfillment policy for every merchant.
ACH payment versus bank payout
An ACH Direct Debit collects money from a buyer. A bank payout sends money to a recipient.
Finix supports both, but the transaction direction is opposite.
| Product | Direction of money |
| ACH Direct Debit | Buyer bank account to merchant |
| Merchant settlement | Finix settlement flow to merchant bank account |
| Bank payout | Business balance to recipient bank account |
The merchant settlement also travels to a bank account, which causes confusion. It is not the same transaction as the buyer’s original ACH payment.
A buyer debit may spend several days inside the ACH Settlement Delay before it becomes part of the merchant’s payout settlement. Finix’s standard merchant payout configuration then determines when the settlement deposit reaches the merchant bank.
One ACH movement collects the money. Another can deliver the proceeds.
Why is the deposited amount lower?
Finix offers Net and Gross payout configurations. Net payouts deduct fees before the merchant deposit, while Gross payouts separate the merchant proceeds and fee debit into different transfers. Net is the default configuration described in Finix’s documentation.
Finix gives a documented example:
- $1,000 in payments
- $30 in fees
- $970 deposited under Net payouts
Under Gross payouts, the merchant would receive a $1,000 credit and a separate $30 debit to the configured fee account.
An ACH payment can also be offset by refunds, returns or other settlement entries.
Open the settlement details before reporting a missing amount. Finix says the Dashboard can show when the merchant will be paid, how much will be paid and why the payout has that value. The documented route begins at Transactions > Payments.
Finix ACH FAQ
Is a SUCCEEDED ACH payment final?
No. Finix says the buyer’s bank may still return it.
How long does Finix ACH processing take?
Finix says complete bank processing can take 4 to 10 business days. Its default merchant settlement delay for ACH Direct Debits is five business days.
Can a customer dispute an ACH payment?
Yes. Finix states that buyers may dispute an ACH Direct Debit for up to 60 days after the original payment date.
Does Plaid guarantee the ACH payment?
No. Plaid verifies account existence and ownership, which reduces data errors and some fraud risk. It does not guarantee available funds or prevent every later return.
Why does my Finix Payment Link lack a bank option?
The merchant must enable Bank Account in the link’s Allowed Payment Methods. Buyers see only the methods configured for that link.
What does INCONCLUSIVE bank validation mean?
Finix could not reach a final validation result. The account may still be usable for creating an ACH Transfer, unlike an account marked INVALID.
Should I release an order when ACH shows SUCCEEDED?
That depends on the business’s risk and fulfillment policy. Finix advises caution because returns can occur after submission and recommends stronger controls when the buyer does not have an established relationship with the merchant.
The practical sequence is to confirm the bank-account validation result, watch the ACH transfer state and wait for the risk period appropriate to the transaction before treating the payment as irreversible.
