How Finix Card Readers and Store Payments Work

Finix supports in-person payments through standalone PAX terminals, API-connected point-of-sale devices and a Bluetooth mobile reader. Merchants can accept chip, contactless, swipe and supported mobile-wallet payments, but the available features depend on the device and integration type. This independent guide is not affiliated with or operated by Finix.

Pick the deployment model first. A standalone terminal requires less development, while an integrated device gives software platforms more control over checkout, receipts and transaction data.

What is Finix in-person payment processing?

Finix provides card-present payment processing for physical stores, service counters, mobile workforces and unattended environments. Its terminal documentation covers devices that communicate directly with Finix or connect through a merchant’s point-of-sale application.

The company currently documents three main approaches:

Standalone terminals are the fastest route when the business does not want to develop a POS integration. Finix currently lists the PAX A800 and PAX A920 Pro for standalone use, provided the device has Payment App version 4.0.0 or later and Standalone Mode is enabled.

An API or SDK integration requires more setup. The merchant or software platform must provision the merchant, configure the terminal, create a Finix Device resource and activate the hardware before processing live transactions.

Which Finix terminals are supported?

Finix documents several PAX devices for different checkout environments. Availability varies by country, integration method and account configuration.

The A800 and A920 Pro both contain receipt printers and rechargeable batteries. The A35 and IM30 are plug-in devices designed for more fixed installations. The D135 is supported in the United States and relies on an Android or iOS device running an integrated application.

Finix does not supply SIM cards for the cellular-capable A800 and A920 Pro. Its documentation recommends Wi-Fi or Ethernet for stronger reliability, while businesses choosing cellular service must obtain and test their own SIM connectivity.

Do not order solely by screen size. Choose according to where the device will sit, whether a built-in printer is needed and whether the checkout software already supports the selected integration.

How is a standalone Finix terminal activated?

Finix’s standalone quickstart begins with receiving the terminal, connecting it to the internet and allowing required application updates to install. The A800 and A920 Pro should be charged to at least 70 percent before their first documented startup procedure.

The normal setup sequence is:

  1. Connect the device to power.
  2. Join a reliable Wi-Fi or supported Ethernet connection.
  3. Install available Payment App updates.
  4. Activate the device under the correct merchant account.
  5. Enable Standalone Mode.
  6. Run a small test transaction.
  7. Confirm that the payment appears under the intended live or sandbox account.

The terminal’s checkout screen allows the operator to enter an amount and choose Confirm and Pay. The customer can then tap, insert or swipe a supported card. An authorization flow may also be available when authorizations have been enabled for standalone use.

Test before opening.

A device can power on and connect to Wi-Fi while still being tied to the wrong merchant, environment or mode. That produces a more confusing failure than a terminal that simply remains offline.

What payment methods can the terminals accept?

Finix says its supported in-person devices can accept EMV chip cards, contactless cards, magnetic-stripe payments and mobile wallets. The exact methods depend on the device, merchant configuration and card-network support.

Card-present describes how the transaction is initiated, not merely where the merchant is standing. A buyer physically tapping or inserting a card into the reader normally creates a card-present transaction. Typing card information into a terminal can be treated differently because the card itself was not electronically read.

That distinction can affect:

  • Processing cost
  • Fraud protection
  • Chargeback evidence
  • Card-network qualification
  • Required verification data

Finix allows manual card entry on supported standalone and POS-integrated terminals. Its documented device flow includes Manually enter a card after the operator enters the transaction amount.

Use manual entry only when the transaction genuinely requires it, such as a phone order or unreadable card. Skip it as a routine substitute for chip or tap acceptance because manually keyed transactions generally present a different risk profile.

Is the Virtual Terminal the same as a card reader?

No.

Finix’s Virtual Terminal is a Dashboard-based method for entering a payment without a physical card reader. A PAX terminal is a hardware device that can electronically read a card or supported wallet at the point of sale.

Both can process a payment, but they create different operating conditions.

A merchant should not describe a manually entered payment as chip-read simply because it was typed while the customer stood nearby. The method recorded by the payment system controls.

Why does a Finix terminal show “Device Unreachable”?

Finix says Device Unreachable means the terminal cannot connect to the Finix backend server. Its troubleshooting process begins with confirming that the Payment App is open and that the device’s time zone matches the physical location.

The next checks are practical:

  • Test the Wi-Fi network with another device.
  • Refresh the terminal’s Wi-Fi connection.
  • Reboot the terminal.
  • Confirm that a business firewall is not blocking the Finix and PAX services required by the device.
  • Contact Finix support when the connection remains unavailable.

Check the time zone early. It looks unrelated to payments, but Finix includes it in the official unreachable-device workflow because incorrect device time can interfere with communication or certificate validation.

For larger terminal fleets, Finix provides device-monitoring functions on the PAX A800 and A920 Pro when the latest Payment App is installed. Administrators can view whether the device is online, when it was last seen and whether it is using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular service.

That is more useful than asking a store employee whether the terminal “looks connected.”

What if the printer or battery is not working?

A missing receipt does not automatically mean the printer is broken. Finix instructs merchants to verify that receipt functionality has been enabled for the terminal before checking the paper roll and hardware.

For faded or missing print:

  1. Confirm receipts are enabled.
  2. Check that paper remains in the roll.
  3. Remove paper scraps or dust.
  4. Close the printer cover securely.
  5. Run a test receipt.
  6. Escalate to support if the problem continues.

For a terminal that will not power on, Finix recommends checking the power connection, allowing it to charge for at least 30 minutes, then holding the power button for at least three seconds. Physical damage to the cable, connector or charging port should also be inspected.

The A800 and A920 Pro support three documented charging modes. Desktop Mode limits charging to 80 percent, Mobile Mode permits charging to 100 percent, and Smart Charging adjusts between those patterns based on seven days of observed use.

A device stopping at 80 percent may therefore be behaving as configured rather than showing a defective battery.

How are tips, receipts and surcharges configured?

Finix’s terminal capabilities include fixed or variable tip options, manual entry, surcharging, uploaded logos, digital or printed receipts and transaction-level device overrides. Some capabilities depend on whether the terminal uses standalone mode or a POS API integration.

Standalone terminals allow common settings, including tipping and surcharging, to be adjusted on the device without constantly returning to the Dashboard.

Receipts can be printed or delivered electronically, depending on the terminal and integration. Finix states that its receipt tools are designed to meet card-network receipt requirements.

Surcharging needs more caution.

The presence of a surcharge setting does not mean the business may add any percentage to every card. Card-network rules and state law can control which transactions qualify, how the charge is disclosed and what amount is permitted. Finix’s capability supplies the technical tool; the merchant remains responsible for configuring and using it appropriately.

Confirm the legal and network requirements before enabling the feature. Skip copying another merchant’s surcharge settings.

Are in-person Finix payments cheaper?

Finix’s current direct-merchant pricing page lists card-present processing at $0.08 per transaction under its published standard subscription structure, plus applicable interchange and card-network fees. Card-not-present processing is listed at $0.15 per transaction under the same displayed structure.

Those figures do not represent the entire processing cost.

Interchange can differ by card type, transaction method and qualification. Hardware, platform pricing, American Express treatment, subscription charges and optional functions may also affect the final amount. Finix provides custom pricing for some larger merchants and separate commercial arrangements for platforms.

The cheapest transaction is not always the cheapest deployment.

A merchant processing modest volume might pay less per transaction with an integrated card-present flow but spend more on terminals, development and support. A standalone device can cost less to launch operationally even when the processor economics are otherwise similar.
